Impact on daily life

Impact. 15th December
UK Government told everyone that they could mix during the Christmas holiday.  Now all the experts say this is a bad idea and will make it difficult for the NHS.  They will not cope if there is a new surge after Christmas.  Even Conservative MPs want the Government to think again about 3 households mixing at Christmas and also to give schools a longer break.  It is obvious – the virus does not know anything about Christmas and will be happy to carry on infecting people.  NHS people say January is always the worst time anyway for illness.  Mixing people together will lead to a big surge in cases.
Many teachers are upset by decisions to keep schools open.  They say it should be a local decision by the headteacher because the rate of increase in virus is not the same from school to school.  Teachers are worried about bringing the virus home at Christmas where there may be older parents and grandparents.  Teachers say they don’t want a holiday but will work from home and teach the pupils online.  This is what is happening in Wales.  Why not in England?
New virus strain… what does it mean?  The virus normally changes (they say mutates) once every month.  It is random.  This does not produce a new virus but gradually the changes build up.  Because travel is reduced across the world the changes are local in different countries.  However, Covid has been around for a year and so the changes have built up.  The changes that happen are in nature as the virus tries to avoid the human body rejecting it.  Flu changes every year and the vaccines have to change every year.  The scientists have found this new version of Covid in the south of England but the vaccine can still defend against this.  But the scientists have to keep checking.
