Research by Imperial College in London shows that the virus is spreading much faster than the Government figures say. There are nearly 100 thousand people catching the virus every day in England. Instead of using the numbers form the Government, they have carried out their own tests on 85 thousand volunteers. They can then estimate the spread across the country. Most cases are still in the North of England but the spread is quicker in the South. In Yorkshire and Humber area one person in every 37 people has the virus. In the South West, the biggest increase is among young people. The researchers say that there has to be action from the Government or people have to change their behaviour because if nothing happens, they see a very bad outcome.
The exams regulator in Wales is saying that the GCSE exams should be scrapped for next year. This has already happened in Scotland. The schools have had too many breaks in teaching and it will not be fair to continue. England still says it wants to go ahead with the GCSE exams.
Share prices in London have fallen to the level at the start of the pandemic because there is a worry that there will be a lockdown and people will not be buying and businesses will struggle. Even if you do not have shares, the drop in value of shares affects your pension and it affects all the businesses in the UK.
