The boss of JD Sports says Brexit is worse than he expected. He says the Government said there would be free trade. That is not happening because of red tape and extra documents. The big issue is that sports goods come from Asia to the UK and then go to the EU. It means extra taxes. It is costing the business millions of pounds and there are big delays. JD Sports say they may have to open a warehouse in the EU. That would be 1,000 jobs .. so less jobs in the UK. It is a problem that sports shops have to close but big supermarkets can be open and sell sports goods. The government denies there is a big problem.
Covid update. Monday there were over 12 thousand new cases. That makes nearly 4 million cases in the UK since the start. There are over 26 thousand people in hospital. Now over 12 million people have the vaccine. The experts now say it will be like flu – every year you need to have a vaccine.
Summer holidays this year? Travel company TUI say that the bookings are increasing. The Government says it is too early to decide. People realise that it is better to have a package holiday because if there is still Covid, you can get your money back. If the travel company goes bust, you get your money back. That would not happen if you just booked for yourself. The other complication is that you need to have covid test in advance and then again at the airport. You have to pay for it extra. Then it might be difficult when you get back if there is still the quarantine.
