Impact on daily life

Impact 16th July
The UK figures are in now – 649 thousand people are not working since start of lockdown.  This is extra to the usual people out of work.  The figures include people who are not registered as unemployed but they are not doing any work and are not getting paid.  There is a worry that unemployment will go up to 4 million.
Report in Scotland says there will be more mental health problems for children and young people when they are to go back to school.  The report says young people were not involved in any of the decisions like exams being cancelled and how they have to work at home if they have no support from families.  Schools were closed and then part opened and now supposed to be open again in August.  Many pupils will need counselling.
Young people leaving school have big decisions to make.  Usually they look for summer jobs or go to University or look for apprenticeships.  But all of that is uncertain as there are few summer jobs, university courses are not the same any more and it is very difficult to arrange a gap year abroad because of the travel restrictions.
VAT reduced for cafes and restaurants …. So was there a big rush to eat and drink?  No.  Numbers of people going to the shops is still very low.  No confidence.  And reduction in VAT does not apply to beer and wine so no advantage to most pubs.
