Impact on daily life

Impact UK 19th June
Unison, the trade Union for public service workers, has a number of deaf members.  It has a good record in supporting deaf members and in campaigning for better conditions.  A blog by 2 deaf on the Unison website explains problems faced by deaf workers.  Starts with no proper sign language interpreting from March with daily briefings.  Deaf people not able to keep up with developments.  Facebook groups often got the wrong information.  Deaf workers then told to work from home… but how?  Not easy to get interpreters and it does not work when hearing people call the deaf worker.  Access to Work not flexible.  Some have been told they have to work from home until December.  One deaf person works in hospital so all staff have to wear masks … communication now really difficult.  Great that courses at work are now online- except they have not been adapted for deaf sign language users.  Unison now want a BSL Act to make sure deaf are properly included.
Black Lives Matter – progress?  There have been four reports on inequality in the last four years.  They had recommendations.  Nothing changed.  So Boris says he wants a new report by the end of the year.  Confusion about face masks for deaf but not for people who support them.  Deafstation needs to do more research on when and who and where the masks can be used.  Are hearing people allowed to drop their masks for a moment in order to talk to deaf people?
