Impact on daily life

Impact. 9th October
Remember the Nightingale hospitals? These were set up in a rush because they thought there would be so many cases that the NHS would not cope.  There were seven emergency hospitals but they have not been used.  One in London was to take 500 people – there were only a few patients and they have all left.  The others in different parts of the country have not been used at all. But they might start taking regular patients.  They cost a lot of money.
Oxford Council is trying to stop the water company (Thames Water) from dumping sewage into the River Thames and polluting the river.  When there is a lot of heavy rain, the water company is allowed to dump the sewage into the river because their sewage works can’t cope with all the water.  This is really bad and means people can’t use the river. Oxford want a new rule to be used.   They call it “bathing water status” – this means that water can be tested more often to make sure it is safe.
Cineworld is closing down until next year.  All their cinemas are shut because not enough people are going there.  They say “they have been killed by James Bond”.  They mean that because the big films have not been released and are delayed until next year, there are no blockbuster films for people to pay money to come to watch.  The James Bond film was to come out in April and was delayed until November and now is not going to come out until April 2021.  So 127 cinemas will be closed down from Friday.
