Impact on daily life

Impact  28th September
The New Covid-19 app was downloaded by over 1 million people on Thursday but there were problems.  It only recorded tests which had been arranged through the app itself – not the tests done by the NHS or by Public Health England.  They say this is fixed but it is only available if you have the latest versions of the smartphone software.  Remember the original app was scrapped in June (cost £11m) –  that app would work with all smartphones.
Crazy situation with universities.  Everyone was warning that when students went back to college they would just ignore the rules and have parties.  Some universities said that they would do all the teaching online; at least one university set up a special virus testing.  But sure enough, students went to parties and then there was a huge increase in the virus.  Now students have to self-isolate but that is hard since the University accommodation is usually just a bedroom and a shared kitchen.  So they are stuck.  The universities did not seem to have any plan to supply food and support if this was going to happen.  Now students are not happy, people in the town are not happy because of the increase in cases and parents paying fees for this lockdown are not happy.  It was all predicted.
Do you live in Tottenham in London?  The virus has a huge impact there as many people work in service – like restaurants and offices.  Now there are over 40% not working and this will get worse when the furlough stops in October – maybe 50% out of work.  The allowance that people receive when out of work is £74 a week.  In Tottenham, Gareth Bale the footballer, gets £600 thousand a week and he is not playing yet because he is injured.  Big difference between rich and poor.
