Impact on daily life

UK Trade Department has a big job on just now.  It has to set out trade deals with all the countries which are not in the EU.
The Department for International Trade has only got deals sorted with Japan, Ukraine and Ivory Coast – and they have to be given to MPS to check.  They have 15 other countries to sort out and only 21 days in Parliament until Christmas.  They have not yet completed the trade talks for for Canada, Turkey, and Singapore.  Why is it important?  On 1st January Brexit happens and EU rules do not apply so countries cannot trade easily without checks.  Labour says it is incompetence as there have been no new talks with other countries at all in 2020.  Labour says the Government has had 4 years to work on these but has not managed it.
UK has lost a record number of jobs (314 thousand) in the last three months.  The unemployment rate is nearly 5%.  For young people aged 16 to 24 years, the rate is over 14%.  The worry is that there are still 2.5 million people on furlough – not sure that they will go back to work.
The Government wants to test all university students so that they can go home for Christmas.  The universities want to know who is paying for that and who will accept responsibility if the tests are not accurate and people suffer as a result.  The plan is to test each student twice – if they are negative then they can go home.  The universities have to put all courses online.
