Impact on daily life

Impact 6th October
What is Long Covid?
Some people get the virus and recover in a short time.  But other people have terrible tiredness for months afterwards.  There are other problems like: hard to breathe, a cough going on and on, pain in the body muscles, hearing and eyesight problems, headaches, loss of smell and taste.  There can be damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and stomach.  Some people get depression, and cannot think clearly.  The doctors do not understand why this is happening.  About one person in every 8 who had the virus, has problems which go on and on.
The job losses in the last 6 months are now at 500 thousand in the UK.  They expect that this number will increase now that furlough is ending.  Shops and restaurants have the biggest losses.
Because of the virus increasing in the UK, hospitals will cancel a lot of regular operations – like knee and hip replacements.  More than 2 million people are already on the waiting list for operations and 83 thousand have been waiting over one year.
There is a big argument in one council in London.  The Government told everyone you have to wear a mask in shops.  The council then tried to get bigger shops to force people to wear masks.   A lot of shoppers found it difficult or did not want to wear masks.  So the Government then told the council that they should not tell the shops what to do.  The council said this is crazy as it was the Government’s rule about wearing masks.  This is putting people at risk.
