UK 22nd March
Yesterday was Census Day. We hope you filled in the forms on paper or online. Very important to pick BSL or British Sign Language.
The census is more important as the BDA want to push the Parliament to have a BSL Act. This can give proper rights to deaf people. They have a BSL Act in Scotland and they are developing one for Wales. So far nothing for England. BDA say they have waited too long – 18 years – that was when one Government department said BSL was a language. Check out the BDA website and write to your MP.
Interesting story about the plan for catch-up in school. The Government said that many children suffer from the pandemic – they have less school. The Government paid £350 million so that there could be extra lessons. Trouble is that the money did not go to schools; it went to outside organisations. The tutors used by one company are not from the UK – they are in India and Sri Lanka. Their pay is much less than teachers in the UK. Half of the money is to pay for the offices in London and only one fifth goes to pay the tutor. The schools also have to pay a quarter of the bill by themselves. This does not look a good deal.
There is going to be a new curriculum in Welsh schools. This will teach children about racism. It will explain about Black and Asian people and will show how they have made a contribution to Welsh life. The plans come from a report by a special committee. The Welsh Government will give £500 thousand to start the programme.
