Impact 9th June
Government has changed its mind about primary schools. They will not have to open for four weeks before the summer. Now they realise it is not possible as class sizes have to be half the normal size and there is just not enough space in primary schools. It is not likely schools will open fully until at least September.
Now there are questions about Universities opening in September and about fees. Many colleges have to change plans about lectures and about student accommodation. Concern is that students might not go to University this year as there are no lectures and it is not possible to socialise in the same way as before. Different universities are planning different rules but most expect that there will be a drop in the numbers of students, especially students from other countries. But the Universities want to charge the same fees as before. Students may not want to pay.
More and more companies are making people redundant. Now BP say they will cut 10 thousand jobs. The demand for oil has dropped and so has the price. That is added to job losses at British Airways, Easyjet, Virgin Atlantic, HSBC, Rolls Royce. The situation looks very bad.
