Impact on daily life

Impact 26th November
A lot of figures here.  So how bad is really bad?  The sudden drop in the economy (what the country earns and saves) is worse than at any time in 300 years.  The Government is borrowing £400 billion this year to pay for Covid.  The main points:

  • About 1.3 million workers in the public sector – will have a pay freeze (police, fire service, teachers).  Unions are not happy.
  • NHS workers (nurses, doctors) and people with pay less than £24 thousand a year will still get some increase (£250)
  • There will be extra money for the NHS – £6billion
  • National living wage will be £8.91 an hour and people aged 23 and 24 years old can get this now
  • The total amount the country earns will drop by over 11% (the worst ever)
  • Unemployment will go up to over 7% next year – they say 2.6 million people will not have a job
  • But there will be a fund to help people get back to work and also help young people to get started in work
  • Support for poorer countries will be cut by £4 billion
  • There will be £4 billion to pay for big projects
  • The actual debt the UK will have, will go up to 97% of all we earn by 2026
  • There will be a new centre for Artificial Intelligence … and also money for a National Cyber Force to deal with criminals and hackers on the Internet.
  • There are increases for school – it is about 2% for each pupil.  No details on special needs children and no mention of deaf children or adults or services to support them.
  • The cost is over £4,000 for every single person in the UK.
  • UK will be paying back for many years.
