Impact on daily life

UK 3rd February
Progress in Scotland
Scotland primary schools are planning to start to open again in February.  Some older kids in exam years may go back as well.  They have practical work to complete.  There will be only small numbers in the schools. It will happen if the virus is under control.  They are talking about making people go into a quarantine hotel if they come to Scotland from other countries.
Lockdown? but lots of children are in English schools
We thought schools were closed because of the virus.  No. Last week there were 1.2 million children in school.    The increase was in primary schools and in special schools.  Parents are worried about children being at home and more people are key workers now.
UK Covid update
The numbers of new cases is lower on Tuesday – only 16 thousand.  There are over 32 thousand in hospital.  Good news is over 10 million people have got the vaccine.
Shock for fishermen
The EU says there is ban on UK fishermen to sell live mussels, oysters, clams and scallops.  EU rule is that live animals cannot come into the EU.  They have to go through a treatment first.  The treatment for fish takes time.  The fish are not good then.  Only fish which are pre-cooked are allowed.  UK Government thought the EU would change the rules.  Now EU say no – it is the same rule for all countries bringing fish.  Fishermen are angry.
