Impact on daily life

Impact. 4th November
A number of big stores are staying open later until Wednesday.  They are expecting an early Christmas rush because of the lockdown and people are not sure if it will be over by 2nd December.  Applies to Marks and Spencer, PC World, John Lewis, the Entertainer.
Hospitals in the north of the Midlands (including Stoke) have almost 600 staff off work because of the virus.  This includes 6 staff who were sent home after they shared lifts without wearing masks.  This is against the rules – the Government says that if people are sharing in a car or bus, they have to wear masks, the windows have to be open and the vehicle has to be cleaned between journeys.
UK virus numbers are still rising with over 20,000 positive tests and nearly 400 deaths.  There is a significant increase in the South West which had lower rates until now.  One Government minister says that there could be more lockdowns – it could be a series – just to try to slow down the virus.  MPs are not happy about the Government deciding on lockdown and want to have more discussions and more control over the decisions.  The debate in Parliament still expects to approve the lockdown starting tomorrow.
UK health experts are asking for tax on red meat and dairy products as these cause high emission (add to global warming).  They want to stop buy-one-get-one-free offers which lead to waste.  They say that food production is responsible for a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas which is leading to climate change.  They do not want people to become vegan but want to reduce the amount of red meat that is produced.
