Impact 2nd June
Schools open but only 40% of pupils turn up. Head teachers are saying that the children are happy but some have to go with different teachers. Many Local Councils are unhappy and say that it is too early.
Cancer services are starting to reopen across the UK. But Cancer UK says about 2.4 million people in the UK are waiting for cancer screening, treatment or tests, because of the virus stopping ordinary services. Maybe 2.1 million have missed out on screening, while 290 thousand who have suspected symptoms have not been referred for tests. More than 23 thousand cancers may not be discovered during lockdown.
Rush for IKEA: Thousands of shoppers have queued for hours (90 minutes at least) to get into Ikea. In Warrington, people arrived at 5.40am to start queuing for the Ikea store to reopen at 9am. Ikea had to close car parks because so many people tried to get in.
Scotland relaxed restrictions on Friday, allowing more people to meet up while outdoors. Nicola Sturgeon said not everyone had complied, with police breaking up 797 gatherings on Saturday. Three times as many cars in some places. Scotland may have to make a law to stop this.
