News. 9th December
We had a report yesterday that MPs had voted to break international law over the treaty Boris signed and which affected Northern Ireland.  Now at a meeting in Brussels, they say they have agreed in principle (not yet in detail) about how trade will work at Northern Ireland borders.  UK Government will remove the part of the new law which would be against the treaty.  This is helpful as the EU said if UK went ahead then the Brexit deal would not happen.
U-turn on the Land Rover Defender – famous old car which can drive anywhere.  Jaguar company stopped building it in 2017.  The boss of a different company, Ineos, said he would build a replacement version and he was buying a factory in Wales and would have 500 workers.  He changed his mind – the factory will be in France.  He was a strong Brexit supporter but then moved to Monaco to avoid UK tax.
Some things to think about for travel to EU after 1st January:
* make sure you have 6 months left on your passport
* make sure you have travel insurance and health insurance because the old EHIC card does not work anymore
* If you are driving, check – many countries need you to have an international driving permit.
* duty free allowances will be back and no tax-free electronics or clothes at airports
* not automatic to take pets or guide dogs – check with a vet 4 months before you want to travel
* you can’t go through the blue lanes at customs – that is for EU citizens.  There will be a separate queue
* you probably need to show you have a return ticket and also that you have enough money for the time you are away.
* from 2022, you will need to apply online for a visa – same as now for the USA.
That is only the start – there will be more.
