News. 24th March
Tuesday was a full year since the first lockdown
.  There were only 364 deaths last March – now there are 126 thousand.  Most people cannot believe what has happened and we are still not finished with lockdown and restrictions.  There was a minute of silence.  The Queen sent flowers to the hospital where the Duke of Edinburgh had his operation; her message said to remember the loss of people and their families and to say thanks to the medical staff who work to help us all.   PM Boris said it was one of the most difficult years in our history.  He said he wishes he had done different things but he will not set up an inquiry into what went wrong.
There is a breakthrough in Physics.  The scientists are really happy and puzzled.  They work in Switzerland at the Hadron collider – this is a tunnel 27 kilometres long where they can bash together tiny particles smaller than atoms.  They have found something very, very, tiny called the “beauty quark” which changes but not in the correct way for the laws of Physics.  Scientists think they may have to change the laws of Physics.  It is hard for most people to understand.  But this is very important as it tells us more about how the Universe was created.
The numbers of young people who are not in work or in education (aged 16 to 24 years) has increased a lot in the pandemic – now over 11%.  Many people lost their jobs because of Covid – two thirds of the people are young people.  The situation is probably worse now – the figures are from last October.
