Job losses – Boots will lose over 4 thousand jobs because of the poor sales and John Lewis will close down 8 stores including a major store in Birmingham.
Brexit: Business are still unclear what is going to happen on January 1st as no planning in UK for the last 6 months because of the virus. The EU say even if there is a deal, the goods will have to be checked when they enter the EU – meaning border checks at Calais, in the Netherlands and into Ireland. They have employed new customs officers to manage this from January 1st. They say there will be new taxes to pay as well. EU offered an extension to allow the UK to catch up but UK refused. On the UK side, there are forms to be filled in (they do not exist yet) when lorries go across to Northern Ireland from Liverpool, and Scotland. Boris said “no” but the tax office says there will have to be. New UK computer systems which are needed will not be ready by the end of the year.
Report of Public Accounts Committee says there should be a league table of the water companies because they are losing too much water through leaks. In England and Wales people use up 14 billion litres of water every day but nearly 3 billion litres just leaks out from pipes that need to be repaired. The report says all washing machines and dishwashers should have labels to say how much water they use. If they do not fix the leaks, then when it is dry weather there may not be enough water for the increasing number of people.
