The UK Foreign Secretary went to the USA to meet with senior people in the Democrat and Republican Parties. He wanted to convince them that the UK was going ahead with the change to the withdrawal treaty but that this would not affect Northern Ireland (the Good Friday Agreement which stopped all the fighting there). This does not look like a success. The Democrats have said if the UK Government goes ahead they will be breaking international law and there is no chance to have a trade deal with the USA. The Republicans said they trusted the UK. The Irish Government and the EU are still very angry and the chance of getting a Brexit deal with the EU is getting less and less.
(This all seems complicated – politics – but it will affect all the people in the UK very badly if they cannot solve the problems).
John Lewis has a huge store in Oxford Street in London. It is now planning to change about half of it into offices. Because there are fewer people buying in the shop, the profits are much lower. They think this will not change for a long time and so it is better to have a smaller area of clothes etc and then rent out the rest for offices. The store in Oxford Street is called a “flagship” store – meaning it was the most important one in the company.
Police are complaining about the protesters in the Extinction Rebellion who are protesting about climate change and trying to make people and the Government become more aware and take action. The police are complaining because they say the protesters go “all floppy” when the police grab them. It makes it difficult to move them as they have to lift or drag them along. It can take four or five police to carry them away.
