Up to the election last December, Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party. There were many claims that the Labour Party was against Jewish people and several MPs who are Jewish were threatened by other members. Two MPs resigned as they were worried for their lives. The Equalities Commission carried out an investigation and published the report. They said that there was anti-semitism and that the leaders of the party made things worse by interfering in the investigations. Starmer, the new leader, accepted the report and said it was a shameful day for the party. Jeremy Corbyn at the same time on Facebook said the report was exaggerated and he did not apologise for failure to deal with the problem. The Labour Party then suspended him because he was denying the problem. There are going to be more problems here for the party. Some say there will be a civil war between those people who support Jeremy and the new leaders.
Croydon council is nearly bankrupt. They have a debt of £60 million but only £10 million in their reserves. Labour is in control and they made risky investments in property and borrowed too much money. They spent too much on social care and then it got out of control. They invested in a hotel but it went bust. Now the Government has sent a finance team to try to sort things out.
In the UK there were another 23,000 cases reported yesterday. These official test figures are less than the other research reports which say it is more like 100 thousand. It is not obvious which figures you should believe. No doubt there is a serious problem.
