Leicester business and shops have to close from Tuesday and schools close by Thursday. This is because there has been a surge in virus cases. The rate is much higher than other cities in the UK. One worry is that more than one third of the population of the city is Asian background and they may be more vulnerable. There are some doubts that they will be able to persuade people to stick to the rules.
Yesterday’s news explained that a political person was to be appointed to replace part of the job of the senior civil servant in the office of the government Cabinet. The person appointed is David Frost. You may recognise the name as he is also the chief negotiator on Brexit. Most people would think it very odd – how will he have time to work on a Brexit deal and also advise the Government on security (he has no experience in that)? He is due in Brussels today to have meetings with the EU to try to make a deal.
Boris is giving a big speech today to tell us there will be new projects to get the country back to working. They call them “infrastructure” projects to mean lots of jobs to build and develop for the future. It looks like this is not any new money – just re-arranging what money and projects were already announced.
