Boris says he is not prepared to accept a trade deal with EU after Brexit ended on 31st December 2020 if it costs us money, limited independence or unfair rules. Boris wants UK to be an independent country and have power to make its own laws, get overseas investments, control its own borders and be able to trade with other countries outside EU without having to obey EU. EU says if UK wants access to its vast single market of 27 countries without tariffs (taxes on goods) then we must follow EU rules for fairness to all. UK could reduce their workers’ rights therefore be a lot cheaper to sell goods at less price than the EU goods. Now there are rumours in parliament that there could be a deal as MPs may have to come back to London on Monday and Tuesday because they have to vote.
The Hungarian Parliament have banned gays and lesbians from adopting children by law. Same-sex marriage is not legal. One partner can apply as a single person. They can allow that partner to adopt. Hungary say they are protecting straight married couples’ rights. The LGBTQ community says its a “dark sad day for human rights”. Poland and Hungary are the most right-wing countries within EU and do not want EU to impose their “liberal values” on them.
EU will make annual checks on big Tech companies (eg Twitter, Google, Facebook) to make sure that data collected are not being misused – rival companies, countries or criminals may steal information (data) to make money or sell information.
Germany has gone into a hard lockdown, closing schools to stop a huge rise in the spread of infections and death. Lockdown will last till January 10th. Should UK be thinking of doing the same?
