At the early stage of Covid in March and April, hospitals in the North of England, set up their own testing for the staff.  But when the Government decided to have a national test and trace, they decided to stop their own testing.  Unfortunately, the national system had problems and so the virus started to spread and is now very serious in those areas.  They have started to have their own testing again but they will have to find the money to pay for it, from the limited budget
Contrast with this:  A company (Boston Consulting Group) has been paid £10 million for four months work.  They are supposed to be trying to fix the test and trace system.  The people working on this are being paid £2,400 per day and the most senior staff are receiving up to £7,300 per day.  The company has been paid over £18 million for different support work related to the virus.  No one thinks the test and trace system is working properly
The head of MI5 – the spy agency – says that that there is an increasing threat from Russia, Iran and China to interfere in the UK.  The threats can include killing people.  They are also trying to spy on the UK vaccine development.  There is also a problem of people on the far-right who do not like foreigners and want to break the law
Morrisons, Waitrose and John Lewis have banned glitter from their Christmas products.  They say the plastic in the glitter is damaging to the environment
