News 31st July
Last year (2019) there were weather records for hottest day ( 38.7 degrees in Cambridge in July) and hottest day in winter (20 degrees in London in February).  The Met Office (who collect all the weather details for over 350 years) say this is because of climate change.  This change is caused by us .. humans by burning coal and oil and having dirty industries.
The House of Lords (Parliament) says the Universal Credit benefit system is making everything worse for many people.  It is a good idea to have one benefit system and to stop all the individual small mounts to give to people.  But the new Universal credit is not working.  More people cannot pay their rent and there has been a big increase in people who go to food banks.  The report says that cuts in social security over the last ten years are causing poverty and hardship.  When people apply for benefit they have to wait 5 weeks.  They can get a loan but then that is taken away from their regular payment.  People say that even when they start getting payments it is very stressful as they keep getting messages about applying for jobs which are not actually there.  Also money goes up and down each month and people cannot plan properly.
Good news maybe.  People who are furloughed but who then are made redundant will get their redundancy pay based on their normal pay, not on what they got when they were on furlough.  The Government says they want to make sure that employers do not try to pay people less than what is fair.
