World News. 30th March
Covid update in Europe:  Spain has more cases again – up to 15 thousand per day.  Bars and restaurants are open but people are not allowed to travel around.  In Turkey, there is to be a lockdown during Ramadan starting 13th April because of the increase in cases.  In France there are over 28 thousand people in hospital with the virus – they have over 95 thousand deaths.  Health experts say the lockdown in Paris is not strong enough to stop the spread of covid.  There are arguments in Germany.  The Government says the States are not following the rules and there are increasing numbers of covid cases.  The States deny this.  But one state, Saarland, wants to end lockdown by April 6th.
We know about the arguments between the UK and the EU over the charges and costs of trade.  It looks like there will be the same argument with the USA.  UK wants to have a tax on the big Technology companies like Google and Facebook.  Now the USA says they can tax the same amount on UK for the goods they sell in the USA.  This could have an impact on furniture, make-up, games consoles and tiles.  This is not what PM Boris promised – our big trade deal with the USA.
More bad news from Myanmar.  The Burma airforce has bombed an area of the Karen people in the south of the country. They are a different ethnic group and want to have independence.  Now the air force attacks them. Thousands have run away across the border into Thailand or are hiding in the jungle.   It looks more and more like there will be civil war.
In Ecuador, in South America, the customs officers discovered 185 baby tortoises in a suitcase.  They were taken from the Galapagos Islands where there are very famous tortoises which have been there for hundreds of years.  Each tortoise could be worth $5,000.  It is lucky only a few had died.  The police are trying to find who stole the tortoises.
