Leading health adviser in the USA says the situation is getting worse. Already 40 thousand cases per day, he says it could reach 100 thousand cases a day unless drastic action is taken. He says the country is going in the wrong direction.
Remember we talked about a drug Remdesivir which could reduce time in hospital when you get the virus. Well, the USA has just bought all the supplies of the drug in the world. No other countries will be able to have the drug for at least 3 months.
The situation in Melbourne in Australia has got worse and parts of the city are in lockdown. Other States have banned travel from Melbourne. In Sydney, there are thousands of rented flats and houses which are empty – many because the foreign students are not travelling to study there.
In the old days…. People went to meetings and conferences in the UK and abroad. They had chats in the corridor, had lunch together and had drinks and fun in the evenings. All gone. Nowadays, the meetings are online through video calls. It is easy to jump from one session or presentation to another but it is not the same as the chance to meet people whom you don’t know and to learn about new ideas. This is like a new world and one we will need to get used to. For the deaf community, it means a big change in culture where touching and hugging and body language are so important. Deafstation is very concerned about the loss of deaf clubs and the chance for deaf people to come together in the same buildings and to chat “under the lamp post” after hours. More research needed.
