World News 11th November
Do you know about Thulasendrapuram? It’s in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was the home of Kamala Harris’ grandfather. There were firecrackers and celebrations. Kamala Harris will be the first South Asian-American and first black vice president of the United States. She visited the village as a child.
Strange … You know China has been testing their vaccine in Brazil with thousands of people? The Brazil President Bolsonaro does not like China (he is a friend of Trump). The vaccine trial stopped suddenly because someone died – the vaccine people said it was not related to the vaccine. Bolsonaro said this was good news and a victory for him as he does not recognise Covid-19 as a problem. Brazil has over 5 million cases and 163 thousand deaths.
Here’s a good story. Do you know about “revenge spending?” In China on 11th November they have the opposite of Valentine’s Day – it is “singles day.” It is to celebrate all those people who are not in a relationship. It is a massive online shopping event. Because Chinese could not travel this year because of the virus, there is a lot of money around. So it is revenge for not going abroad. Last year they bought 1.9 billion goods. This year they say Robot cleaners, vacuums and toolboxes will be popular. The scale of this is staggering – over £40billion spent already. Much more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. They even have mobile lockers for people to collect what they order (see picture).
