World news 17th July
Black Lives Matter in Australia. Different from USA because the black people are mostly Aborigine, who were in Australia long before white people. In the last 30 years 400 black people died when arrested by police. Now there are protests and demand to have more money for black people. They have the worst jobs, worst health and are very poor.
More on climate change. Scientists are saying if we continue like now, by 2070, the summers could get hot for people to go outside to work. They say your body gets ‘heat stress’ and so cannot cool down properly and then you get really sick. We need to save the planet and stop global warming. Very urgent.
Seems weird …but in Florida if you been convicted of a crime you cannot vote. That was changed in the law to allow people to vote. Now it has been stopped because they say if people owe a fine or other money from a conviction in the past, they can’t vote. But guess what? There is no way for people to find out if they still owe money. So over 700 thousand people in Florida will not be able to vote in November. It affects more poor Black and Hispanic people.
Latest on the virus: 14 million cases in the world, 600 thousand deaths; over 2 million cases in Brazil, 3.7 million cases in the USA. BUT… UK has the most cases IN THE WORLD for the size of the population. Trump says USA does most tests in the world, but not true …..compared to size of population, UK has more test for the population.
This what the sun looks like when you get close (well, 48 million miles away). It is really hot and there are sudden flares where gas is burning. The arrow shows a small flare, called a ‘camp fire’. Not so easy to understand for us …. but, scientists are really excited.
