UK has a law that 0.7% of UK national income is to be given to poorer countries – overseas development fund. Now the Chancellor is planning to reduce this but he has to change the law. Many people have said this is a bad idea as the fund helps to keep Britain’s reputation across the world.
The Pope says for the first time that the Uighur people are being oppressed. China denies this – they say their camps are for educating the people. They have millions of people locked up.
During the lockdown people did not travel in their cars in buses or in planes. This reduced the pollution in the air and helped to lower the carbon emissions. However, the scientists at the UN, say that this was minor and that the greenhouse gases are still increasing. If we do not reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere , there will be huge climate change and that means more heatwaves, droughts and floods and poverty.
In Germany, at new Year people can buy fireworks – it is the only time in the year. Millions of fireworks are set off in streets and on balconies and everywhere. This year they will be banned because there are so many injuries from the fireworks that it will be too much extra work for the hospitals dealing covid.
Trump is allowing Biden to begin the process for taking over the US Government. He does not agree that he has lost … and says he will continue to fight. He just says it is in the best interest of the country to let Biden have access to the Government departments and funding.
