The problem in the United States continues with Trump (Republican) and Biden (Democrat) arguing over who is responsible for the problems in two cities – Portland and Kenosha. Black people are being shot by police and then there are demonstrations.  Biden says this is because Trump is encouraging people who are vigilantes to bring guns into the city. Trump is claiming that the demonstrators are terrorists. This is a very dangerous situation and will get worse.
At the big convention last week, Trump was accepted as the candidate for the Republican Party.  A lot of people were upset that he made broadcasts each night from the White House – this is not supposed to happen because this is the official residence of the president not a place for talking to his party.  And each night he had one or two of his family giving speeches.  But they hardly mentioned Covid-19.  Trump still refuses to wear a mask and does not encourage other people to be safe.
There are nearly 6 million cases of virus in the USA. Over 180 thousand people have died. This is the largest number in any country in the world. There are over 25 million cases in the world. The biggest daily increases at the moment are in India.  In the UK the figures over the weekend were over 1700 this is the largest number since the middle of May and suggests that the problem is increasing again.  In Scotland the Government is worried that there is an increase in cases, in Glasgow and in Lanarkshire.  All over Europe there are more virus cases and some say this is the second wave coming.
The Democrat party have now accepted Joe Biden as their candidate.  They also accepted Kamala Harris as his partner for the election.  She is the first woman who has Black and Asian origins.  She is the first “woman of colour” in this position.
