Not about the Virus

Not about the virus 8th June
Huge protest and marches across the UK in most major cities over the weekend.  Some violence in London at the end.  In Bristol, the statue of Edward Colston was pulled down and then dragged to the harbour and pushed into the water.  Colston was a well-known rich businessman 300 years ago, but he was involved in transporting people from Africa to be sold as slaves in America.  Police knew this was a planned action as people had brought ropes but decided not to intervene.  An investigation will be carried out later.
Alongside Brexit, the Government is trying to discuss a new deal with the USA.  They say it is a high priority for when UK is not part of the EU.  Some of the standards for food are very different in the USA from the UK and Europe and there is a worry that UK might accept poorer quality food from the USA.  There is a still a threat that American drug companies and health companies will try to take over the work of the NHS.  What the Government is saying is not always clear.
You will remember that there were a lot of issues of refugees last year (and continuing) – some were deaf.  Special problem was young people and children who were not with adults.  UK did not have large numbers of them but they were put into special care.  Now the protection for the children has been reduced and young children have started to disappear.  It is believed that they are taken away by gangs.  It is not known how many are involved.
