So what was VE Day?
On 8th May,1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had finished. Germany surrendered the day before. The fighting had lasted 6 years across all the countries of Europe and into North Africa.
The war started for many reasons because Germany was growing and started to want more space and began to take over countries in Europe. When they walked into Poland, Britain and France had to support Poland.
Millions of people suffered but families were separated and in Britain, life was very difficult – not enough food, bombing. When it was the end there was a lot of celebration and relief and husbands came back home from the war.
There was a lot of happiness.
